Manda Panda & Baby Crochet Pattern

Have you ever taken a second to sit back and watch PANDAS?? They have got to be the world's most adorable animal. I wish I could be a Panda. They sleep, eat, and roll around all day. A Panda special I was watching said that one of the men who works with them trains jiu jitsu because a lot of panda's movements are similar to those of jiu jitsu. I feel like since I have a barely blue belt in jiu jitsu, I love to eat (maybe not just bamboo), I like sleep, and I'd love for everyone to say, "Awwww, look how cute!" every time they saw me, that maybe I'm part panda and don't know it! How cool would that be?!

Also, I'm not sure what animal year the Chinese Zodiac is on, but if there is a Panda Year, it should be this year. Quarantine has involved a ton of eating and sleeping, not to mention we've been dealing with the stupid Covid-19 Pandemic. I'd much rather survive a Panda-mic, which I'm convinced is an overwhelming amount of baby pandas everywhere you go. I'm totally down for that! Well before I get too carried away talking about my panda obsession, here is the pattern for the Baby Panda and Manda Panda, fondly named after one of my favorite instagram friends who recently told me her nick name was Manda Panda.

Assembly:

Attach Ears: Sew ears on between rows 19 & 20, leaving 2 open stitches between them.

Attach Tail: Between rows 4 & 5 of the body, attach the tail in the center of the top side of the bears body.

Attach Front Paws: Turning bear onto its back, you will attach the front paws in the black band section. Find center of the black band, count out 3 stitches to right and left. This is where you will attach the front paws on either side.

Attach Back Legs: Keeping bear on its back, you will attach the Back legs between rows 3-7. Count out 3 stitches from center and attach one the right and one on the left.

Embroider Nose: Using the ears as a guide, I found the center of the top of the head and embroidered a nose between rows 25 & 26. I made the nose about two stitches wide, and after about 6 times of wrapping yarn through those stitches I ran one strand from the bottom of the center of the nose through the center of the last round.

Embroider Eyes: Between rows 23 & 24 just below ears, embroider eyes about 2-3 stitches in length. Be creative, panda eyes aren’t all the same or uniform, so don’t be scared to give it a little personality. If you don’t want to embroider eyes, you can cut a small piece of felt for each side shaped like a small black bean and glue it on between rows 23 & 24.

~~slst and leave a yarn tail to attach to head in the assembly section~~

Assembly:

Attach Right Leg: The easiest way to attach the legs in the correct position is lay the panda body on its back. Position the right leg so that the toes part is turned out to the right slightly. Pin to body so the inner most part of the leg starts at round 2 of the body and the outer most part is around row 11. Stitch into place

Attach Left Leg: The left leg will attach very similar to the right leg. Laying the left leg so the toes point up, you will attach this between rows 2 and 11 like you did the right leg. Having the toes facing different angle gives this poor tired momma panda that dead-to-the-world and sprawled out look.

Attach Bunny Slippers: Pull bunny slippers onto the feet and stitch around back edge to hold the slipper in place. Use a scrap of black yarn to embroider a bunny face like below. I started with one stitch going vertical from the center of the front, up one stitch. Then I did two horizontal stitches intersecting that first one to form the nose. In the row above the nose I did one horizontal stitch on either side of the nose to create the eyes.

Attach the Front Paws: Lay the Panda on its belly. Inside the black band, count 4 stitches to the left of the center, stitch the left panda arm at this point. Count 4 stitches to the right of the center of the black band and place the right panda arm.

Attach Eye Patches: Between rows 8 - 12, attach eye patches with 3 sts between them. You want to position them so the nose is centered below them.

Attach Ears: Ears are going to be attached between rows 15 & 16. Using the eye patches as a guide, you want the inside edge of the ear to be in line with the inside edge of the same side eye patch.

Embroider Mouth: Between row 4 & 5, following the curve of the round, create a smile about 5 stitches long, in the center of smile stitch a vertical line going from between row 4 & 5 to just under the nose. This is just a recommendation. You can play around with the facial features and create your own look.

Eye Mask: Slip the eye mask on over the eyes with the strap looping behind the head.

OPTIONAL Bamboo Shoot: Take an 8" piece of green pipe cleaner and fold it in half. Feed it through the center of the right paw. Cut some leaf shapes out of self-stick green felt and wrap them around the top third of the bamboo shoot.
